A number of environmental projects from our portfolio has been selected to provide an indication of our capacity to perform the tasks you need. This list is by no means exhaustive. We would be happy to provide details of more projects if required.

Groundwater Study

We carried out a groundwater study of the level of chemical contaminants in the First Quaternary Aquifer, throughout Bowden, Brompton, Ridleyton and Ovingham related to chemical contamination levels in filled pugholes. Levels of heavy metal, arsenic, total cyanides, PAH total hydrocarbons, volatile hydrocarbons and total phenolics were measured after establishing a string of permanent monitoring stations.

AMDEL Laboratories, Frewville

This 2.1 hectare site in the valuable Burnside residential area had been used for various testing laboratories since the 1940s and was surplus to AMDEL's needs. The site had used a broad range of chemicals. It contained sites of demolished buildings and facilities related to wartime "secret" classification relating to nuclear activities as well as two large two storey office and active laboratory buildings. Koukourou were engaged to prepare a full environmental assessment in preparation for the land being disposed of predominantly for residential use. The report identified minor spots to be cleaned up. Purchaser acceptance of the reports was good and the sites were sold and developed quickly.

The Burley Griffin Project

Described as a 'textbook example of urban consolidation', this six hectare medium density housing site for the SA Housing Trust at Brompton was formerly an industrial area including claypits, a premix concrete washdown site, a council depot, a refuse dump and a heritage-listed incinerator. Contaminants included heavy metals, hydrocarbons and alkaline cementitious soils. Previously set aside as unsuited for redevelopment, the site was subjected by us to intensive analysis, following which we developed and supervised a remedial program with substantial site works involving 85,000 cubic metres of soil, with full occupational safety and public health protocols being followed. Exhaustive monitoring and validation testing confirmed all results.

Glenside Hospital

This 4 hectare site was surplus to Government requirements. Koukourou carried out the final environmental assessment and designed the remediation programs to remove minor contamination with PAHs. Koukourou let, supervised and project managed the demolition and environmental clean up contracts. A 19 million dollar housing development is now under construction at the site.

Allenby Gardens Land Division

Assessment of an 18 hectare site which was the subject of an SDP rezoning from industrial to residential was carried out for the Corporation of the City of Woodville. The environmental assessment revealed little contamination of any consequence. The site was formerly occupied by a brickworks and contained a pughole which was remediated by filling and recompaction involving 500,000 cubic metres of fill soil being treated and placed under Koukourou supervision.

Chullora

ChulloraConversion of a 13 hectare disused bus depot site in Sydney into a 308 unit housing subdivision. The site was the main workshop for the Sydney area accommodating 400 staff working under cover. Site facilities included a large coal fired boiler house, degreasing works, a heat treatment works and a battery maintenance facility. The works carried out by Koukourou and Pioneer Homes involving environment surveys identifying light contamination with heavy metals, hydrocarbons, asbestos and PCBs, design and implementation and supervision of the clean up and demolition, subdivisional design, project management and construction supervision as well as geotechnical investigation and footing design.

Free Street, Newmarket, Queensland

Chemical screening of a 21,000 square metre retirement village site for contamination with heavy metals, arsenic, total cyanides and TES was carried out for Pioneer Homes. The site was a former tannery. Remedial recommendations, supervision of clean up and post clean up validation testing were carried out by Koukourou.

Harbourside Quay, Port Adelaide

Port AdelaideEnvironmental assessment of an 8 hectare former dockland with up to 2 metres of fill for the Department of Premier & Cabinet. Remediation required included bioremediation of soils and groundwater contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons, remediation of soils containing extremely high percentages of heavy metals and general contamination with heavy metals on a lesser scale.

Ocean Steamers Road, Port Adelaide

This 2.1 hectare site located in a derelict area of the old docklands was proposed for a factory development. Koukourou were engaged to carry out environmental assessment. Heavy contamination with heavy metals was found. The environmental and health risks were quantified and economic environmental management plans were developed. Koukourou developed site and occupational health management plans to be incorporated into the site lease agreements, which allowed the project to proceed.

AMDEL Mining Laboratories Townsville

When the time came to decommission this facility and dispose of the property, Koukourou carried out the necessary "due diligence" and environmental assessments. Environmental remediation works were carried out under Koukourou's supervision. The property was cleaned and certified satisfactory for sale after treatment of minor heavy metal contamination.
