Environmental Auditing of Contaminated Land

Auditing of contaminated land involves the independent, objective, credible and transparent reviews and appraisals of independent site contamination assessments, having regard for current and future beneficial uses of the site and any offsite impacts. Site Assessment investigations are engaged separately to the audit and are reported by independent environmental consultants. When auditing consultant’s site assessment reports Environmental Auditors must take into consideration relevant Federal and State Regulations, Acts and guidelines.

Environmental Audits (otherwise known as site contamination audits) may be triggered by requirements such as a planning condition, condition of sale, due diligence requirements, development requirement, Clean Up Notice and/or an Environmental Audit Overlay (EAO).

The majority of Australian states and territories have developed environmental audit legislation, regulations and guidelines in accordance with the Commonwealth framework (eg. National Environment Protection (Assessment of Site Contamination) Amendment Measure 2013 No. 1 (ASC NEPM 2013)). Environmental audits are undertaken by accredited/appointed auditors across most states in Australia (i.e., Victoria, NSW, SA, WA and Qld). EPA Victoria implemented an environmental audit system in 1989 which led to a national movement for auditing environmental performance and the condition of the environment.

FMG Engineering has accredited/appointed auditors to undertake auditing in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.
